Simple mastectomy and SLNB with Magtrace
The case
In this video, Jill Dietz, MD, performs a mastectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy.
The patient in this video was diagnosed with breast cancer on screening mammography and was found to have a grade 3 retro-areolar mass, that was ER-positive, PR-positive and HER2-negative.
The 67-year old patient had extensive calcifications throughout the breast, toward the nipple, leading to a simple mastectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy, using the Magtrace® lymphatic tracer to identify the sentinel nodes.
Dr Dietz began the case by injecting Magtrace intra-operatively while the patient was under anesthesia.
The outcome
In this procedure, Dr Dietz was able to remove two sentinel lymph nodes.
The first lymph node was a deep brown color and registered a high counts reading.
The second lymph node was much smaller and contained blushings of brown and a slightly lower magnetic signal.
Both nodes were sent off for frozen section to determine the next steps in the patients treatment pathway.
